Dogs Understand Fairness

Fascinating, Erika. :- ) Good stuff.

I wonder if the syndrome could be attached to the snubbed doggie being placed in a submissive position by the leader of the pack, and then not wanting to compete with the dominant (favored) dog?

The submissive/dominant syndrome might just be contextual -- ie, maybe the dog's reaction is instinctive/subconscious, provoked by a situation in which it is "losing" to the other dog.

No idea what's going on. The inference that the second dog is reacting with irritation to unfairness is an interesting one. Not sure there aren't other possibilities, also.

Great head-scratcher here.

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks, Jeff, and that's a really good point! The researchers only proved that "dogs understand when a situation is unfair," so you're right, it's just anthropomorphizing to say that "they stop performing because they're bitter."
