Circus Elephants Finally Freed

Following a heavy two-year campaign that included tens of thousands of letters and e-mails, demonstrations, and phone calls by concerned activists, three elephants—Tina, Jewel, and Queenie—are being freed from the cruelty they’ve endured from the traveling circus that purchased them.

On August 15, the USDA began to fulfill their promises of saving these animals by confiscating the most severely abused elephant, Jewel, who was obviously emaciated from food deprivation. The other two elephants remained with the Davenport circus family as they refused to cooperate with the USDA.

Take a Stand for Elephants

As much as you can say about PETA, you have to admit that they’ve got guts. Going undercover to expose animal abuse can’t be an easy task. Are you pro or against animal euthanasia? I used to be staunchly against it—until I realized just how bad the problem of overpopulation is. I’d much rather see a poor cat put out of her misery than be left to starve, be abandoned or beaten, or be run over by a car.

I do think we should have stricter laws about animal reproduction, however, and think that these animal breeders who do it for profit—“purebred” animals or whatever—shouldn’t be allowed to breed as vastly as they do. With so many poor “mutts” and mixed-breeds needing love and care, we don’t need any more “miracles” made. Read more

Most teenagers have something they don’t want their parents to find hidden away in their rooms—porn, birth control receipts, pot, porn, weapons, brochures for Mime College, porn. But I think it’s a safe guess that when you’re snooping around through your kid’s diary or secret under-the-floor-planks-stash, you really don’t expect to find a helpless, shivering baby bird.

Let alone 53 of them. Read more
