I just got a puppy from the Humane Society and she will not stop biting me for anything. It seems like all the time I spend with her is me yelling at her “NO!” and trying to keep my hands from getting bloody. Does anyone have any advice to help me get her to stop biting me? And advice at all. Thanks. :)

Alot of pet stores sell repellant and bitter products that are used to keep pets from biting and chewing on things. One that comes to mind right off is grannicks bitter apple, and u would just spray it on ur hands and when the dogs bites ur hands they get a mouthful of nasty tasting stuff, most get the picture really quickly and soon stop biting, other then that, try to encourage her to play other types of games i.e. throw a ball and play fetch, play tug of war (depending on how u feel about that game, some ppl say don’t play it b/c it increases aggresion and other things) . Hope you get some help on this.

Thanks a lot. I’ll have to go to Petsmart and scope out some biting repellant. Hopefully it’ll work. We also got another puppy who’s a little older and she is so sweet, hasn’t tried to bite me even once and she’s a pit bull/dobie mix. :) I love dogs! :) Thanks again.

I do not know how old the puppy is, but it is important to remember that puppies will naturally wish to chew on things and hands/feet are great “chew toys”. If you have other chew toys, encourage her to chew on the toy rather than your hand. Have you tried the yelping method? When she nips you, you yelp as if in pain. It works some of the time. If your dog does not like water, spritzing her in the face w/ water when she bites can be effective. Yelling at her may not always be effective. Training her to sit with treats can help focus her energy on treats rather than on your hand. Just some helpful suggestions. HOpe they help, good luck!

I suggest that you spray your hands, legs, anything you don’t want bitten with Bitter Apple or Fooey, which can be purchased at any pet store My maltese bit me constantly when I first brought him home and that’s what I did. Now he’s a year old and never offers to bite anybody or anything. Your puppy is exploring by “mouthing” and at this age she’s teething. Good luck and this will pass.
